|After spouse has returned from Crow Mountain with fresh picked blueberries, do the following:
Pick through berries to remove stems, leaves, etc. Place berries in a thick bottomed pot. Crush the berries and add the sugar (I use the full amount of sugar; others may not want as sweet a jam). Mix well. Bring the mixture to a slight rolling boil. Stir every few minutes to make sure the berries do not burn. Boil for approximately 45 minutes.
When finished boiling, pour hot mixture into sterilized canning jars. Seal and turn upside down for 15 minutes.
This recipe does not require the use of pectin. The natural pectin in the berries should be enough to thicken the jam if it's boiled long enough. To test, place a small amount in a cooled saucer and place in the fridge. If the jam thickens, then you are done.
You could substitute 2-4 cups of honey or 3-6 cups of brown sugar instead of the white sugar. (Thanks Megan for this).
